In a major breakthrough in the murder of Indore tourist Raja Raghuvanshi, Meghalaya Police have arrested three suspects from Madhya Pradesh and confirmed the surrender of Raja’s wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, officials said on Sunday. One more suspect is still at large.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma announced the developments on social media, stating that the case had seen significant progress within seven days. “Three assailants… have been arrested, a female has also surrendered and operation still on to catch 1 more assailant,” he posted on X.
According to Meghalaya Director General of Police, the woman who surrendered has been identified as Sonam, Raja’s wife, who had initially been reported missing along with him.
Sonam was reportedly found in a distressed condition and is currently housed at the Sakhi One Stop Centre in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, a shelter for women affected by violence. Authorities have informed Madhya Pradesh Police, and further details are awaited.
The couple, both from Indore, Madhya Pradesh, had travelled to Meghalaya for their honeymoon. They were last seen on May 23. Tragically, Raja’s body was recovered on June 2 from a gorge near Sohrarim, close to Cherrapunji. Sonam had remained missing until her recent surrender.
In response to the incident, the victim’s family has demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe. Raja’s brother, Vipul Raghuvanshi, and mother-in-law, Sangeeta Raghuvanshi, voiced distrust in the local investigation and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene. “We want justice for Raja and hope that a CBI probe helps us find Sonam soon,” Vipul said.
Meghalaya Minister Alexander Laloo Hek reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to justice, assuring that the case is being handled with utmost seriousness.
Investigations continue as authorities work to apprehend the remaining accused and uncover the full circumstances behind the suspected murder.
